32 Recording Problems Solved: With The MIC CHECK Masterclass in Beat 05/26
No matter how expensive your plug-ins are or how good your monitors sound: if the recording isn’t right at the source, fixing it later becomes a struggle. In our 24-page “Mic Check” special, we show you what really matters when it comes to microphone types, polar patterns, technical specifications, and proper placement. On top of that, you’ll find practical tips for typical recording situations, creative recording ideas, expert know-how, and an overview of 25 current microphone models. This way, you can solve common recording problems right at the source and find the right microphone for your application more quickly.
14 tricks to instantly make your recordings more interesting
Many of the most exciting sounds are not created with plug-ins, but directly during recording. Even small changes in room, microphone technique, or performance can make a recording feel much more alive. This is exactly how some legendary sounds were created – for example by Led Zeppelin, Nirvana, The Beatles, or Adele. The following 14 hacks show how you can bring more magic into your recordings with simple means.
Free Software: Wave Alchemy TRIAZ Player – 4.000 Drums, Endless Beats!
Want to build beats quickly instead of spending ages searching for sounds? The Triaz Player provides you with 4,000 high-quality drum samples and 200 kits in a powerful drum engine featuring 12 channels, a mixer, and features Channel, Send and Master FX. Bonus: Our Quantum Rhythm Engine web app delivers fresh MIDI grooves at the touch of a button, mapped for and ready to play in the Triaz Player.
Test: Sequential Fourm – a Portable 4-Voice Prophet
Connoisseurs will spot it at a glance: The Fourm is an analogue synthesiser in the classic Sequential design, which immediately brings to mind the legendary Pro-One from 1981. Unlike the Pro-One, however, the Fourm is not monophonic but four-voice polyphonic, which explains its somewhat unusual name.
Hands-on: Strymon Cult Reverb For Your Rack – Completely Free!
If you want to build vast soundscapes from just a few notes, but your reverb only produces a standard ‘reverb’ effect, this rack is the solution: You can freeze a long reverb tail into a controllable sound field and prepare it for pitch and harmonic manipulation. This effects rack is inspired by the Time-Warped Reverberator on the Strymon NightSky, a cult pedal with an exceptionally unique sound. by Maya Consuelo Sternel
GEMA strikes back at SUNO
Things are heating up in the realm of copyright law – and this time, the ground is shaking beneath the feet of the AI giants: After GEMA already put OpenAI in its place, Suno AI is now in the crosshairs. On March 9, the first round of arguments took place at the Munich Regional Court, and the allegations are serious: It’s no longer just about text, but about the music itself.
GEMA has demonstrated that AI generates results for songs like “Atemlos” or “Forever Young” that are so similar to the originals that one could almost call them digital copies. The suspicion: AI isn’t just learning; it’s “memorizing” our works. This is a milestone in the battle between creators and artificial intelligence. Because let’s be honest: without the millions upon millions of hours we spend in the studio, these prompt-generating tools would be nothing more than hollow algorithms.
This case could finally set the long-overdue “avalanche of justice” in motion, ensuring that creatives can still make a living from their work even in the AI age. We’ll keep you updated on how the case progresses. Feel free to check out our social media channels—the news there should be up before the next issue.
Stay creative and make music!
